Carlo Actis Dato...
Italian baritone saxophonist Carlo Actis Dato is deluded. He either thinks he's leading a Balkan travelling circus orchestra, or he thinks he's Gerry Mulligan living in a cartoon world of pre-war Algiers. Either way, his music is darn fine, especially live (you can read my post on his quartet's gig in Auckland in October last year here). Dato has repeatedly been named as one of the top baritone players in the world by Downbeat magazine, and his bands have chops to burn.

oh man i love this stuff! i absolutely must pick this up. i was tellin' freeman a while back that i'll prob do an Ivo Papasov &/or Ferus Mustafov post one of these days -- for the more direct balkan/gypsy/eastern European stomp fest sound. But this is sublime. . .
p.s. maybe he's not deluded so much as light headed -- it takes a lot of breath to blow the bari & bass clarinet ya know.

If you're impressed with his recorded work, you MUST see him live on stage if you ever get the chance. Then the music REALLY makes sense :-)
